The White Lion symbolizes Queen Elisabeth's Yorkist heritage.
First used by Roger Mortimer, Earl of March (1328-60), founder of the Order of the Garter, passed on to the House of York and was used by both Richard II and Edward IV.
The lion has a shield that bears the white rose of York combined with the golden rays of the sun - the sun mark was important to Edward IV, who saw the sun as a sign of happiness in battle. Battle
Queen Elisabeth II is portrayed on the front, while the back has The White Lion by Mortimer, and highlights the most important part of the Lion's story - its mane, tail and shield.
